AI-Assisted Writing & Generative AI Policy

AI-Assisted Writing & Generative Artificial Intelligence Policy

The Yemeni Journal of Life Sciences recognizes the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in scholarly writing and research workflows. The journal adopts a balanced and responsible approach toward AI-assisted technologies.

1. Permitted Use of AI Tools

Authors may use AI-based tools only for limited support purposes, such as:

  • Language editing and grammar correction
  • Improving clarity and readability
  • Formatting references (with verification)
  • Generating code or scripts with full human validation

AI tools must not be used to:

  • Generate original scientific content
  • Produce results, interpretations, or conclusions
  • Fabricate data, images, or references
  • Replace critical scientific reasoning

2. Disclosure Requirement

Authors must explicitly disclose any use of AI tools in the manuscript, including:

  • The name of the AI tool (e.g., ChatGPT, Grammarly, etc.)
  • The purpose of use (language editing, editing assistance, etc.)

Disclosure should appear in:

  • Acknowledgements section or
  • Methods section (if relevant)

Example disclosure:

“AI-assisted tools were used solely for language editing and did not influence the scientific content of the manuscript.”

3. Authorship and Responsibility

  • AI tools cannot be listed as authors
  • Authors remain fully responsible for:
    • Content accuracy
    • Originality
    • Ethical compliance
    • Data integrity

4. Detection and Editorial Assessment

  • The journal may use AI-detection and plagiarism screening tools as part of the editorial assessment.
  • Detection reports are supportive tools, not definitive evidence.
  • Editorial decisions are based on:
    • Scientific merit
    • Content consistency
    • Transparency of disclosure

5. Misuse of AI Tools

The following constitute ethical violations:

  • Submitting AI-generated manuscripts as original work
  • Failure to disclose AI use
  • Using AI to fabricate or manipulate data or references

Confirmed misuse may result in:

  • Manuscript rejection
  • Retraction after publication
  • Temporary submission ban

All actions follow COPE guidelines.

6. Compliance with International Standards
